THE ITALIAN AMERICAN CLUB OF EXPORT
The Italian American Club of Export was founded in 1934, during the depths of the Great Depression. Originally located on Madison Avenue above what is now the Moose Lodge, the club was ideally situated near the bustling mining operations of the time, offering miners a much-needed respite and a cold drink after a long day underground.
In the mid-1950s, the club relocated across Turtle Creek to its current home on Kennedy Avenue. The building, originally constructed by the Westmoreland Coal Company, served as the powerhouse for the mines and was later transformed into a washroom where miners could clean up after their shifts.
As the coal mines, which had long been the backbone of Export’s identity, began to close in the 1960s, the town faced new challenges. Yet, the residents of Export, bolstered by local employers such as Dura-Bond and others, remained committed to preserving the community and its spirit.
Today, Export is enjoying a renaissance, with vibrant biking and walking trails, thriving restaurants, local businesses, and active community clubs. The town continues to evolve, blending its rich history with a bright future.
